If you have read anything about watches I am sure you have come across the current situation with Rolex. Without getting into the reason behind why this is happening, if you want a Rolex you have to wait. You have to wait a long, undisclosed amount of time.
After you wait, and keep waiting you may, at some point, get a call from a dealer. After you get the call you will be told that you have been chosen, and that you have 48 hours, or there about, to come get your watch or it goes to the next person. Yep, a Rolex dealer told me they had chosen me. I then had a weekend to get to the dealer to purchase the watch. Luckily for me I was home that weekend but if I wasn’t I am sure I would have lost the opportunity to get my long awaited Rolex.
So now what? You get the long awaited call. They tell you that you were chosen and make you feel all special. What about the experience, what is it like to buy a Rolex.
It was, well, nice. It was just a nice experience. The people were friendly and knowledgeable. They wanted you to enjoy the experience and soak it all in. The stage was set, and drinks were offered. You are brought to a back room where it is just you and the people working at the Jeweler/Authorized Dealer. The room was decorated extremely well with rare Rolex merchandise and various inspiring items and pictures. The room told a story.
The room felt as if you were in a Rolex video. A video that made you feel like you were a part of something bigger. Something that stood for what is right and was held to a high standard. I will give it to them, they accomplished this mission. I felt cared for, but not catered to. It was an experience that was not what you may expect. There is much talk about “stealth wealth” from the ultra wealthy and TV’s shows like “Succession” where logos are not a thing. Ultra high quality discrete items are of utmost importance which is definitely the vibe I was getting.

Alright, enough background and more on the actual watch. The first gentleman came into the back room and offered the drinks and we went through the formalities. I politely declined the drinks offered. He left for a brief minute and brought in the watch on a tray with the box and papers following shortly by another member of the store. Once everything was in the room I was able to inspect my new timepiece, my new Rolex. After you inspect the watch and it is to your liking, which at this point it better be given you have likely waited an extremely long time, the sizing process begins. They measured my wrist and took the watch back to be sized. This took a couple of minutes and it was returned to me. While the watch was being sized the gentleman helping me took out an iPhone and scanned the warranty card to activate it and then gently packed it back up in the box.
The watch was returned and handed to me. I put it on and it fit. It was fairly straight forward. Everything was functioning like a well oiled machine. There was clear attention given to ensure everything was flawless but not fussy. I never felt like they were trying to impress me. They were doing a job, and doing it very well. Before you say, I am just another Rolex fanboy, I should mention that I am in fact the opposite. I have avoided dealing with Rolex for many years as I did not want to put up with waitlists and buying other pieces to move up the list the buy what I actually wanted. I am a huge fan of Omega. Omega is a brand that is pushing the boundaries of watchmaking and doing so with some impressive innovative designs. The best part, you can actually buy one. Shocker I know, but you can walk into an Omega dealer and walk out the same day with the timepiece of your choosing.

As for the watch, I purchased a 36mm Rolex Datejust. It has a jubilee bracelet with a fluted bezel. It is as amazing as you would think. Built like a tank, flawless, beautiful, and timeless. It is quite simply a brand that can do no wrong. Everything they release is incredible. I think they are much like Porsche, as everything Porsche seems to produce is better than nearly, if not all rivals. They simply make an incredible product. I wear the watch with pride and it brings me immense joy. I do not baby the watch as many owners do. I wear it as it is intended to be worn. To buy a Rolex and keep it in a box is a disservice to you and the watch. Wear it and enjoy it. Let it inspire you and humble you.
